We usually don’t think of it that way- when we think about sleeping disorders, we think of insomnia or sleepwalking. Snoring is what your granddad does on the sofa every afternoon, right? If however you are a smoker, now’s a great time to think about stopping. If you’re wary about stopping outright, try and cut down on the amount that you smoke before going to bed. The same applies for drinking- alcohol tends to relax the muscles in your throat, making it tough to breathe and induces snoring.

Another important aspect in learning how to stop snoring is to look at your sleeping positions. Some people advise sleeping on your back to alleviate snoring but the truth is that if you’re obese, sleeping on your back will only make it worse. Make sure that your neck and head don’t settle in odd positions- if possible, ask your partner to give you a small nudge when you start snoring in the night. This is usually enough to stop it and allow you to settle in a better sleeping position.

Snoring is not the sweet, little eccentric quirk that we like to think it is. It is actually your body telling you that it’s high time you learned how to stop snoring.
