Some people don’t even know that they snore. It is not until a friend or family member informs them that have any idea. Other people snore so loudly they wake themselves up. There are many potential treatments available for snoring. Often why people snore is a result of restrictions in the nasal passages. This can sometimes be alleviated by using nasal strips.

A common reason for snoring is obesity. In fact, being overweight is perhaps the most common reason why people snore. Extra weight makes breathing more difficult because the throat is more compressed. An overweight person is more likely to snore regularly and more loudly than the a person who is at a healthy weight.

Another reason why people snore is if they have extra skin in their throat. This extra skin makes the airway more crowded and it vibrates during breathing. Often this sort of problem can be remedied with surgery.

Snoring Prevention

Even without knowing the reason why people snore, it is possible to try an effective treatment. For those that aren’t heavy snorers,

relief can often be found by using nasal strips or nasal sprays. There are often herbal remedies available that might reduce the symptoms of snoring. Sometimes sleeping position is why people snore. Instead of sleeping on your back, try sleeping on your side.

Sometimes over the counters shouldn’t be used without knowing why people snore. If you aren’t sure what is causing your snoring, or if it is very severe, then you might want visit a doctor. Sometimes snoring is indicative of another sleep disorder such as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a dangerous sleep disorder in which the snorer actually stops breathing for extended periods of time. This can be dangerous and should be treated right away.

There are other reasons why people snore too. Sometimes snoring is the result of enlarged tonsils. Surgery might be the best solution if this is the case because there isn’t another treatment available. Knowing why people snore is the first step to deciding on the right

treatment. Your doctor can help you decide what treatment is best.

What causes snoring?

Snoring is caused when there is abnormal movement of air through the airway passage combined with the vibration of the soft tissues of the throat. With the assumption that there are no pathological conditions in and around the oral cavities such as polyps or cancer, its exact cause is hard to determine alone. It could be one or many causes, such as: a misaligned jaw, collapse of the tongue to the back of the throat or collapse of the walls of the throat, an enlarged tonsil, a congested nose, vibration of the uvula, or a floppy epiglotis.

How bad is snoring?

Snoring could be a sign of a more serious problem called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Aside from making the snorer a bad bed fellow, sufferers of OSA considerably increase their risk of having destructive health conditions like high blood pressure, enlarged hearts, and may sometimes even lead to early deaths.

What are the available treatments for snoring?

In order to have a successful treatment of the problem, it is important to know what the cause or causes are. Sometimes, it is advisable to have multiple treatments to have a complete cure. For non-surgical options, there is the use of oral or mouthpieces to be worn overnight to keep the tongue in place and the palate firm, nose clips to keep the nostrils open while not in touch with the soft membranes, and the CPAP apparatus with a pressurized mask worn by the patient with the supervision of a doctor. Surgery offers repair of the nasal passages through reshaping or reconstruction of a deformed or defective septum, removal of the tonsils, removal of the adenoid glands, partial removal of the uvula, pharyngeal arches and the soft palate to widen the throat area, genioglossal advancement, tongue base reduction, and other procedures to correct the cause of snoring.

What are the steps to treat snoring?

The first thing to do is to go to an ENT (ear, nose and throat) physician for a thorough examination. The procedure may include the insertion of a tiny fiberoptic scope into the nasal passage to view the back throat area. A test to determine if the patient is suffering from OSA such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI may be advised.

Are surgical procedures covered by insurance?

The cause and severity of the problem may play a great part for you to be reimbursed by your insurance company on such procedures. It is best for you to consult them first before undergoing such treatments if you are not sure.
