What Causes Snoring Anyway?

Everyone snores occasionally, kids, adults, grandparents even animals do sometimes. Some people snore more than others and this snoring often disrupts their sleep and the sleep of others around them, making it difficult to get a good night’s rest. There are a couple factors that play into snoring that are important to understand as you search for your cure. Some of the factors you can control and others you can not.

First the factors you can control. Being over weight can increase your snoring because the fatty tissue in your neck makes your airways smaller, resulting in it being harder to breathe. Your sleep posture also plays a role. When you sleep on your back your neck muscles relax and block the throat, again resulting in it being harder to breathe. Finally a history of smoking will result in more snoring because both smoking and second hand smoke cause congestion in the throat and nose.

Now the snoring factors that you can’t control. Snoring may simply run in your genes. Heredity may give you a smaller throat making it more difficult for the movement of air. As you become older the muscle tone in your throat lessens and your throat becomes narrower. None of us can stop aging so inevitably the aging factor is beyond our control. And lastly, if you are male, you naturally have a greater tendency to snore. Men have a narrower throat than women do, simply because of genetics.

Breathe Right (a snoring relief product) says that 54% of adults say they have been awakened by someone else’s snoring. With a statistic like that, it is easy to see why it is important to understand snoring and what it is and isn’t and what can be done for it. Snoring is not something you simply have to live with, there are methods curb and cure snoring.

Although there are factors you can control and factors you can’t doesn’t mean there are answers for only a few. Curing snoring takes some research and trying a few ideas but the effect it will have on your sleep and the sleep of those around you is worth the effort. Just picture waking up from an 8 hour sleep actually feeling ready for the day. Instead of waking up wishing you had another sick day to call in and use. So don’t give up on finding your cure for snoring, because the results will change all aspects of your life.
